Emotional family drama dressed up as a gripping mystery story, Julieta tells the tale of a woman’s life, centred around the relationship with her missing daughter.
Almodovar plays with great success with story time (plot advances in very ingenious ways through Julieta’s life periods, great time transitions) and the knowledge of the story world, totally restricted to the audience and in some part to Julieta as well.
Simple and effective visual language, saturated colour palette.
Old school “Hitchcockian” genre convention cues create expectations and arouse curiosity (the suspenseful music, the intersecting lines of action).
Highly rewarding film experiences need only to follow the same old heart, in conflict with itself principle.
